Leawood was founded in the 1920s by Oscar G. Lee, a retired police officer from Oklahoma. However, before this, a town had stood within the borders of a Leawood called Oxford, and earlier than that, the area was under the control of Wynadot and Kansa Indians.

When Oscar G. Lee moved in, he established Lee Boulevard, which paved the way for further development. In 1948, the Kroh Brothers constructed a housing development, and following this, Leawood was soon incorporated as a city.
